Mouthing and Teething in Baby

Mouthing and Teething in Baby

When?
Babies start grabbing things when they are 3-6 months old. Once they manage the grab and able to put their hands to their mouth, they start mouthing

Why?
One reason of mouthing is to explore the world and experience the sensory information. It starts from familiarising with hardness / softness to taste and shape when they grow older.

They may also be teething to ease the pain as they grow their teeth. This can also help them self-soothe and relax when they are hungry, sleepy, uncomfortable etc.

Tips To keep your baby safe when mouthing:

  • Remove small / little items causing choking hazard, such as marbles and coins
  • Keep away household items causing suffocation such as plastic bags
  • Put away anything poisonous such as nail polish and pet food
  • Give your baby safe objects such as teething toys to develop the mouthing habit instead
